Sapporo Lilac Festival
In the Spring, Sapporo is given a fresh new look as flowers sprout all across the land. In Sapporo, the most famous of these flowers are big purple lilacs.
In May, the annual Sapporo Lilac Festival is held to commemorate the captivating array of flowers blooming all over the city.
The place that has the most lilac flowers is Odori Park. With 400 trees covered in lilacs, adults can listen to musicians play in the park, while children can race each other in the annual “stamp rally” and see who can collect the most stamps.
However, the most popular event that is held around this festival is the “Lilas Mariages” wine garden. Here, popular vineyards show off their wines, while chefs will show audiences how to make lavish meals from ingredients found in Hokkaido. For less than 800 yen, you can sample the best wines and finest dishes from this event. Amongst these beverages and samplers are Hokkaido cheese, meant to be enjoyed together with the wine, and beef stew-flavoured sake, which is an excellent pairing to any meal!
Every year the best wines are consumed before the end of the event, so if you are a bona-fide wine lover, quickly come to the festival!
While the rest of Japan is getting drenched during its rainy season, you can sample what the summer in Hokkaido has to offer. We hope to see you there!
