Good afternoon everyone, today we would like to carry on the theme from the last blog post and introduce the best spots around Hokkaido for viewing the bright orange, red, and yellow autumn leaves.
The first snow fall of the year was recorded on September 20th which saw the highest peak in Hokkaido (Mount Asahidake) get crowned in snow, 5 days earlier than the yearly average. It was 10 days earlier than last years recorded date. Mount Asahidake is part of the Daisetsuzan mountain range that towers over the central part of Hokkaido. It is the largest national park in Hokkaido and is larger than some of Japan’s smaller prefectures. It is a paradise for outdoor lovers and the first place in Japan to see the autumn leaves and snow each autumn.
In particular, the autumn leaves of the Daisetsu Kogen Onsen, based on the eastern side of the national park, offers some of the most spectacular autumn colors in all of Japan, usually the best in the second half of September. The area also offers accommodation with hot spring baths and it connected to a popular hiking trail that leads through a pond dotted highland densely populated with brown bears. Hikers actually need to attend a brief lecture at the bear information center before setting off.
If you are looking to view the autumn leaves closer to Sapporo City, you should head over to the Niseko-Shakotan-Otaru Kaigan Qausi-National Park to see the leaves that surround Iwaonupuri, and active volcano. When the trees are colored with vivid red and yellow leaves, the foot of the volcano almost appears as if it’s burning.
We also recommend you to visit Takino Suzuran Hillside National Park, located in the southern part of Sapporo. Within the huge 400-hectare grounds there is a colorful flower garden, large playground equipment, three waterfalls and a forest that is abundant with autumn leaves.
Jyozankei Onsen is another great places to see the beautiful autumn leaves! Walking up and down the winding paths that are surrounding by mountain streams, a variety of tree types exist that are beautifully colored, making the scenery breathtaking.
Finally we would like to introduce Maruyama Park in the western part of Sapporo City. Maruyama Park is not just a cherry-blossom viewing spot, but is also a charming spot during the autumn leaves season. The entire park fills with beautiful colors and makes for great photographs against the backdrop of the Hokkaido Shrine.
Please enjoy the many spots that Hokkaido has to offer when viewing the autumn leaves!
