Hello everyone. Here in Sapporo, it is getting warmer and spring is definitely just around the corner. Prior to the tourist season, this time we will be introducing the new polar bear hall facility which opened on March 13th at Maruyama zoo.
Inside the polar bear hall, an 18 meter underwater tunnel which is the longest in Japan has been installed, so that visitors can see polar bears swimming overhead! It is an amazing sight to see their white hair flowing behind them as they glide through the water. There is also a section that features many interesting exhibits. There is an exhibit next to the pool of seals that reproduces the appearance of living together in the Arctic Circle. Furthermore, there are panels that convey the ecology of polar bears and environmental problems which they are facing. It is an interesting facility where you can learn about the current state of the Arctic Circle.
Not necessary in Hokkaido, Asahiyama Zoo in Asahikawa city is the most famous, but Maruyama Zoo is also very conveniently located close to many tourist spots such as Okurayama Olympic ski jump which overlooks Sapporo city, Hokkaido Shrine and Maruyama Park. No matter what season it is always a great idea to take a walk around the area!
